Musem - main building

Accessible to the public

U Muzea 398/4, Jablonec nad Nisou

The magnificent Art Nouveau building with floral style elements was originally owned by the export company Zimmer & Schmidt. The building was designed and constructed between 1903 and 1904. Emilian Herbig, a prominent architect and builder from Jablonec, was also responsible for the extension of the right wing between 1922 and 1923.

An extraordinary example of Jablonec Art Nouveau architecture, the site was declared a listed building in 1958. Nevertheless, it underwent several structural alterations over the following hundred years.

In 1964, a side staircase made of monolithic concrete was added, designed by local architect Karel Pelant.

In 2002 - 2004 the building was completely refurbished to the designs of Atelier 4 s. r. o.

In 2020, an attractive glass extension in the shape of a glass crystal was completed. The design was the result of an architectural competition held in 2014. The winning design, by Hlaváček-Architekti Praha, best symbolised not only the internal contents of the building, but also the focus of the entire museum. The project also included the revitalization of the museum park.

The building has served as the museum’s headquarters since 1949, when the collections of the then Art Industry Museum were consolidated here.

The building is publicly accessible and provides wheelchair access and movement around the museum for disabled visitors. Currently, there are three permanent exhibitions (The Endless Story of Costume Jewellery, The Magic Garden - Seven Centuries of Czech Glass and The World of Miracles), temporary exhibitions, a creative studio and a gift shop. Part of the building serves as a depository and workplace.
