Kaleidoscope of Taste

Czechoslovak Costume Jewellery Exhibitions 1948–1989

The publication comprehensively deals with the presentation of costume jewelery products at Czechoslovak and international exhibitions in the years 1948–1989. The period of socialist exhibitions is introduced by a chapter on the history of Jablonec costume jewelery exhibitions since the 19th century and a text on the importance of specialized arts and craft schools of art in the region. The main topic – the presentation of jewelery in the period of socialism – is chronologically approached on period archival materials and unique photographs and presents both individual types of exhibitions in the country and important exhibitions of costume jewelry products abroad. The book also explains the relationship between market requirements and their fulfillment by manufacturing companies and also shows the important role of the Jablonex Foreign Trade Company. For the first time, the final chapter explains in detail the important role of individual costume jewelery designers and, for the first time, comprehensively presents their work on photographs and personal professional medallions.

The critical catalogue for the exhibition was financed by funds from the Programme in Support of Applied Research and Experimental Development of National and Cultural Identity for the Years 2016 to 2022 (NAKI II) of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic within the bounds of the Design of Czechoslovak Glass and Costume Jewellery 1948–1989 project (DG18P02OVV031). The Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou is in charge of the project.
